Our I.T. scenario pre-LANserve should never have happened to any small business. We started in October 2001 with 3 workstations and a server, plus the Managing Director linking his laptop from time to time. We quickly grew and, coupled with expansion into the next-door office, we often see 3 laptops connected plus the 3 workstations. We are very dependent upon the Internet for our business. We have a business that includes 2 exciting brands . We communicate extensively via email with our consultants, who are all home-based from places as far apart as Melbourne and Regional Victoria; and many of our customers too. The Challenge We relied upon the expertise of our hardware suppliers (a local company), but with their staff turnover and lack of understanding of I.T. systems, our server gradually ground to a halt. The server was somehow constantly creating dummy files. We were blamed for telling them to relax the firewall we were using - full access on our workstations would access the server at a snail's pace. For a week or so chaos ruled, where we lost our email histories and could not even update our website. To rub salt in the wound we discovered that the tape back-ups done daily were not working, so that when our server hard drive was reformatted, we could not restore data from the tapes. Fortunately, we had kept alternative back-ups for most of our work, whether on laptops or workstations. We needed to bring our consultants into our system from their homes, so we bought expensive software that was not properly tested and the I.T. firm did not how to implement! |
